From the French work meaning "spray of ink," a Giclee (ghee-clay) print is created by using state-of-the-art computer technology to reproduce images. By printing the image on media much like that used for the original, (either canvas or archival paper), a piece of artwork stunningly similar to the original is created. With the advent of Giclee the art of fine art printing has become even more precise. Because no plates or screens are used, the prints have a higher apparent resolution than lithographs and the dynamic color range is greater than even serigraphy.

Giclee prints render deep saturated colors and have a beautiful painterly quality that retains minute detail, subtle tints and blends. In the Giclee process, a fine stream of ink, more than 4 million droplets per second, is sprayed onto archival paper or canvas. The effect is similar to an airbrush technique but much finer. The paper or canvas is carefully hand mounted onto a drum which rotates during printing. Exact calculations of hue, value and density direct the ink of four nozzles. This produces a combination of 512 chromatic changes 9 with over 3 million colors possible of highly saturated pigmented, non-toxic state-of-the-art archival ink. The artist's color approval and input are essential for creating the final custom setting for the edition.

Giclee prints capture every nuance of an original painting, and have gained wide acceptance from artists like David Hockney and Robert Rauschenberg to major institutions like the Chicago Art Institute and The Louvre in Paris that uses the process for the reproduction and display of works which cannot be allowed out of the museum cellars, and would otherwise never be shown to the public.
